Updated: Jun 30, 2021

As earth is heating up, protection from the harmful UV rays along with staying hydrated become two of our top priorities in the hot summer days. Conventional sun lotions, sprays and creams provide very effective protection against the negative effects of sun exposure, but at the same time can be very harmful to the environment.

Environmental impact of conventional products for sun protection

Oxybenzone, benzophenone and octinoxate, that are common ingredients of conventional sun protection products, cause coral bleaching and DNA disruption which leads to numerous growth defects in corals. The fragile ecosystems within the coral reefs are key for supporting the existence of an extraordinary variety of marine life by providing food, protection and safety. That means that toxic chemicals have a detrimental effect on a wide range of biodiversity in marine organisms affecting many fish, shrimps, urchins etc.

Did you know that scientists estimate that whole 14 000 tons of sunscreens are washed into our oceans each year?
